A recent Board of Education meeting covered several important topics and decisions affecting the school district. A key discussion focused on a grant application that could provide $50,000 for maintenance repairs at Coal City Intermediate School.
The board formalized an agreement with the Coal City Community Unit Education Association/IEA/NEA concerning a non-attendance day for faculty at Coal City Intermediate School. Additionally, 52 revised board policies were approved after their third reading.
Membership renewals were confirmed with various local organizations: Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry ($290), Three Rivers Education Partnership ($750), and the Grundy Economic Development Council (GEDC) ($300).
Superintendent Chris Spencer reported on a meeting regarding a responsible bid ordinance, though no action was taken by the board. Educators Angie Phillips and Tricia Togliatti were praised for completing their certification process through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
Board President Ken P. Miller awarded certificates to elementary and intermediate schools for their exemplary designations as noted in the Illinois State Board of Education’s Report Cards. The certificates were presented to principals Taryn Trotter and Tracy Carlson by State Representative Jason Bunting.
Superintendent Spencer also shared his invitation to participate in the Illinois Association of School Administrators' School for Advanced Leadership program. The board accepted resignations from several staff members, including Melissa George, Matt Murphy, Kali Roed, and Tricia Smith.
Sheryl Strle was hired as a full-time classroom aide at the early childhood center effective January 7. On recommendation from high school athletic director Brad Boresi, volunteer coaching positions in wrestling were approved for Zach Berman, Joey Breneman, Jake Masters, Ryan Masters, Bob McGuinn, and Nick O'Bert.
The current student enrollment stands at 2,183 students. Superintendent Spencer announced town hall meetings on January 15 and January 22 to discuss issues related to Coal City Intermediate School with community input welcomed.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for February 5 with a study session planned for January 29; both will be held at 6 p.m. in the Administration Center Board Room.
