Students in Mrs. Traxler’s sixth grade English class at Coal City Middle School have been working on narrative continuation essays after finishing the novel The Giver. The assignment asked students to write their own endings for the book, which concludes with an ambiguous finale.

As part of this project, students practiced using dialogue, sensory details, and figurative language in their writing. They also focused on maintaining a consistent point of view and correct paragraph structure.

“It has been entertaining to read the different endings her students have created,” Mrs. Traxler said.

The next unit for these students will focus on nonfiction reading and writing.
