Coal City Intermediate School is temporarily closed due to structural issues identified in its North Gym. The decision to relocate students and staff to Coal City Elementary School was made following consultations with the Regional Office of Education, structural engineers, and architects from two firms.
The closure stems from damaged trusses in the gym's barrel roof, which have caused a lateral crack in the north wall. Despite temporary measures to secure the wall, further damage was observed. On October 22, the gym and adjacent areas were closed after inspections revealed that a weight-bearing truss on the north side of the gym was split, leading to additional stress cracks.
In response, during a special meeting, the Board of Education hired Performance Services to stabilize the gym roof and north wall and provide long-term solutions for the building. This stabilization work is expected to cost between $150,000 and $200,000.
Jason Smith, chief business official of the district, explained plans to install "deadmen" outside the north gym wall and floor-to-ceiling wood piers inside. This will involve removing the gym floor and bleachers. "This work is only intended to stabilize the space," Smith stated.
An emergency health and life safety resolution was approved by the Board allowing funds for this project. Starting Monday, November 4th, students will attend classes at Coal City Elementary School. Classrooms are being prepared for fourth and fifth graders at this location.
Ken P. Miller, Board of Education president commented on logistics: “Will it be tight? Absolutely. Is it going to be ideal? No, but it is what we have to do.” Superintendent Chris Spencer added that having a safe learning environment remains a priority: “We believe that this is the best option for our students and staff."
Classes for fourth and fifth graders are canceled on Friday, November 1st; all other grades will continue as planned.
