Coal City High School Bands recently hosted their annual holiday concert, showcasing performances by the Symphonic and Jazz Bands, as well as the Percussion Ensemble. The event took place on December 3.
The Jazz Band, consisting of 26 student musicians, performed "Big Band Holiday" and "This Christmas," featuring vocalist Melody Kinder. Soloists for the evening included Ava Meyer, Vincenzo Mugnolo, Martin Ramirez, Anthony Royster, and Mayson Wantroba. The band is set to open the Joliet Junior College Jazz Band and Jazz Combo Concert on December 6.
The Percussion Ensemble performed two pieces titled “Escape from Pirate Cove” and “Journey to Jordan.”
The Symphonic Band, comprising 60 members, played three songs. Their performance concluded with a sing-along led by Coal City choir director Michael Kren and community members. The band began with “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” introduced by Jaiden Lemman. They continued with a medley from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” ending with a holiday sing-along featuring classics like “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer.”
Annie Ternes directs the high school instrumental music program.
Upcoming events include a Fifth and Sixth Grade Band Concert on December 5, a high school choral concert on December 10, a middle school band concert on December 17, and middle school choirs performing on December 19. All concerts are at 7 p.m. in the Coal City Performing Arts Center and open to the public. The Madrigal performances are scheduled for December 13-15.
