Coal City High School Madrigals host annual holiday performances this weekend

Jennifer Kenney Director of Curriculum & Assessment | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

The Coal City High School Madrigals are preparing for their annual holiday performances, scheduled to take place this weekend from December 13-15 at the Coal City Performing Arts Center. The event will feature a concert and a medieval comedic play with elements such as dueling knights, jesters, and the king’s trumpeter.

Led by seniors Logan Hausman and Melody Kinder, who have been chosen by their peers as Madrigal king and queen, the program consists of a select group of student vocalists specializing in 15th and 16th-century a cappella music. The performances will include traditional Christmas carols alongside newer selections.

Hausman and Kinder have been involved with the choir for four years, setting an example for their peers in both rehearsals and performances. The royal couple is accompanied by jesters Mason Natyshok and Sam Vota, adding humor throughout the show.

The 20-member choir includes Eliana Chernesky, Olivia Sage, Gianna Savarino, Leo McCants, Jordan Olson, Aubrey Grunwald, Martin Ramirez, Evelyn Wills, Wyatt Chase, Cora Armstrong, Caroline Childers, Isabella Palacios, Anastasia Papach, Elizabeth Nadess, Olivia Vota, and Brady Pierson.

Performances are set for Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday's performance will begin with a buffet dinner featuring roast turkey among other dishes. Tickets are priced at $5 per person for Friday and Sunday shows; Saturday's dinner show tickets are $18 each. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door before each show.

These performances mark the end of the Madrigal season that has included various events like caroling at local markets and festivals.
