The annual winter concert by the Coal City High School Choirs took place on Tuesday, December 10, at the Coal City Performing Arts Center. The event focused on a theme of hope and light.
The Coaler Choir opened with "Give Us Hope," arranged by Jim Papoulis. They also performed "Shine Like Stars" and "It's All Right" from Disney's "Soul."
Coal City's Footnotes show choir presented "Where Are You Christmas?" with solos by Cora Armstrong, Caroline Childers, Mason Natyshok, and Madison Wilson.
The Concert Singers performed three pieces: starting with "Lux Arumque," followed by "Can We Sing the Darkness to Light?" and concluding with "Be the Light." The final song included accompaniment by high school musicians Shaun Polarek and Liam Seeley.
Directed by Michael Kren, the choirs were accompanied on piano by Erik Olson.
The Coal City High School Madrigals were invited to join the concert. This 20-member group performed three songs that will be part of their annual Madrigal concert and play scheduled for December 13-15 at the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available online or at the door.
Following these performances, the next event in the Coal City Music Department's calendar is a concert featuring the middle school band under Andrew Brimm's direction on December 17. The season will conclude with a middle school choir concert on December 29. Both events will start at 7 p.m. in the Coal City Performing Arts Center.
