School counselors working toward the betterment of all students

It’s National School Counseling Week, a time that recognizes the work of school counselors like Christina Schultz.

As the elementary school counselor, Mrs. Schultz is guided in the mission to maximize the personal/social, academic, and career potential of all students through the delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program. Her work at the elementary school is focused on individual counseling needs in the areas of anxiety, friendship issues, anger, self-regulation and grief and loss. She works with small groups on healthy friendships, coping with anger and anxiety, and she is part of the positive behavior character traits awards program.

“So far this school year, we focused on building students’ feelings identification and social skills through a series of small group lessons delivered to some second and third grade students. We targeted coping skills, self-control, and served students in individual and small group settings,” she said.

In January, students focused on problem solving and goal setting. This month the focus in Mrs. Schultz social work/counseling groups is on working as a team, playing games respectfully and having fun.

By the numbers, Mrs. Schultz has held 212 individual sessions with students, held 248 group sessions, engaged in 30 classroom lessons, provided support at 29 team meetings, participated in 15 individual education plan [IEP] meetings, made 62 parent contacts and received 26 referrals since the start of the academic year. Most importantly, she reports the percentage of students served is 100.
