The Coal City Chapter of the Illinois Music Honors Society recently inducted three new members during its Fourth Annual Induction Ceremony on April 15. These additions to the Music Honor Society, which supports music students committed to their school programs, include Jackson Hollis from the class of 2029, alongside Abbi Hitchcock and Melody Leman from the class of 2030.
The society, which is open to middle and high school students in Illinois, seeks to foster opportunities for leadership and connection among young musicians engaged in school music programs spanning band, choir, madrigals, and other performing arts.
Membership in the Music Honor Society requires demonstration of musicianship, leadership, citizenship, and scholarship. Contributions embodying these traits were shared by current members Melody Kinder, Mason Natyshok, Jacob Cimino, and Rhaina Vanek.
Michael Kren, the school district's director of choirs, remarked, “The sound from the gong resonates outward from the center, and it is our hope that the influence of this distinguished group of students will do the same.”
Following the induction, the audience heard from Kevin Soto, a 2015 graduate of Coal City High School, who is now a social worker and musical director. Soto addressed the members, emphasizing how music has significantly shaped his life, leading to experiences such as marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and forming lifelong friendships. "A song may end, but the feeling that song gives you never dies," he stated.
In addition to welcoming new inductees, the ceremony also recognized senior members, marking their achievements with honor cords presented by music instructor Ann Kodat. Performances were given by Melody Kinder, Vincenzo Mugnolo, and Mason Natyshok, accompanied by Michael Kren. Kinder performed a piece from "Wicked," while Mugnolo and Natyshok presented selections that showcased their musical talents.
Despite not attending, Mackenzie Messina was also acknowledged for her contributions. Messina, a member of several bands, was part of the state-recognized ensembles selected by the Illinois Music Educators Association.
Coal City’s chapter is operated by the Coal City Music Boosters with support from the faculty overseeing the district's music programs.
