Mrs. Piatak’s eighth-grade science class is concluding the year with a focus on human biology. The emphasis of this unit is on understanding how various systems function together to support one another and maintain homeostasis. As part of the curriculum, students are involved in a hands-on activity involving the dissection of chicken wings.
“We compared the wing to the human arm. Students were able to observe skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone marrow. While working with the chicken wing, students could demonstrate why skeletal muscles work in pairs. They were also able to see how ligaments affect the stability of a hinge joint and what happens if a tendon is torn,” explained Mrs. Piatak.
This practical learning experience aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of anatomy and the interactions between different biological systems.
