Coal City Middle School's track and field teams participated in the Illinois Elementary School Track and Field State Finals over the weekend, achieving significant success. The school's eighth-grade girls' team emerged as the 2025 Class 3A Girls State Champion. Marina Figge led the team, securing three individual medals, including a first-place finish in long jump. She also contributed to a team medal in the 4x100 meter relay alongside Kenslee Baldauf, Norah Minuth, Kinsley Novak, and alternates Avery Male and Angelise Stevens.
The eighth-grade boys' team secured third place overall. Their state champion 4x400 meter relay team comprised Levi Marshall, Kenny Tazelaar, Jonah Micetich, and Maddox Meents with alternates Nick Pfeiffer and Frank Roehr. They set a new school record at state with a time of 3:42.51 and completed their season undefeated.
In other events, the boys' 4x200 relay team took second place with a time of 1:39.01. The boys' 4x100 meter relay finished in 17th place. In individual performances, Rylan DeMichele achieved a personal best in shot put to finish second. Maddox Meents placed fifth in long jump while Jonah Micetich set a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles for sixth place.
Nick Pfeiffer and Levi Marshall advanced to the finals in the boys' 400 meters with Pfeiffer setting a personal record for sixth place overall. Spencer Vaira and Jonah Micetich competed closely in pole vaulting, finishing eighth and ninth respectively.
Kiptyn Dearth represented Coal City in discus with a throw placing him 26th overall. Frank Roehr set a personal best during preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles.
Marina Figge had an outstanding performance by winning long jump with a new IESA Class 3A state record of 5.26 meters. She also set personal records in her other events including second place finishes in both the 200 meters and third place in the 100 meters.
The seventh-grade boys' relay team also competed over the weekend finishing 14th overall.
Upon returning home, athletes were celebrated with a parade through Coal City village followed by recognition at their school.
