Coal City Elementary celebrates annual Classgiving event ahead of Thanksgiving break
Chris Spencer, Superintendent | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

The week before Thanksgiving is typically shortened for students at Coal City Elementary School, which provides an opportunity for the annual Classgiving event.

This year, Mrs. Vahle-Reck, a teacher at Coal City Elementary School, incorporated a story and related activity into the celebration. She explained that each part of the story was paired with a food item representing an element from the narrative. "For example: the winter was cold and hard; add marshmallows to represent the snow," she said.

"We took turns reading the sections of the story, finding the foods, and putting them into the bowl. Everyone got to enjoy their hard work and snack on the Thanksgiving mix," Mrs. Vahle-Reck added. "This was the third year of having a Classgiving with my students. It is always a fun way to enjoy the last day before Thanksgiving break. I hope to continue it for many years to come."
