Students in Ms. Swink's eighth-grade English classes are currently focusing on prepositional phrases to enhance their understanding of sentence structure. By identifying these phrases, students can more easily pinpoint the subject and verb, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement. This foundational knowledge helps them write with intention rather than randomness.
In addition to grammar, students are exploring the elements of strong written arguments. They are learning how to craft arguments that appeal to logic instead of emotion. This skill will be crucial as they prepare for an argumentative essay and a reading assessment over a paired argument text later in the semester.
The curriculum includes continued grammar work with lessons on verbs, verb phrases, word usage pairs, and organizational structure. These topics will be revisited as students approach their first grammar test in mid-October.
"Learning about the different aspects of sentence creation allows students to craft their writing with intention rather than haphazardly," stated Ms. Swink.
