Seventh graders tackle fiction challenges with escape room activity

Val Clark 6th Grade ELA & Social Studies | Coal City Middle School

For the last few weeks, students in Mrs. Himes' seventh-grade English/language arts class have been engaging with various elements of fiction. The curriculum includes tasks such as identifying characters through direct and indirect characterization, recognizing types of character conflicts, determining themes in reading selections, and labeling parts of the plot.

To hone these skills, students completed task cards at different stations, providing opportunities to discuss fiction elements with their peers. As a final activity, they participated in an "Escape Room" challenge. This required them to identify fiction elements, crack a code using a cipher, and successfully escape the challenge.

"Students were challenged to an 'Escape Room' by identifying these elements," said Mrs. Himes about the culminating activity.
