Veterans Day lesson emphasizes gratitude and learning in fourth-grade class

Ali Scrogham Secretary | Coal City Intermediate School

Mr. Vigna, a former social studies teacher at Coal City High School, visited Mrs. Anderson’s fourth-grade classroom to educate students about Veterans Day. The lesson covered the military branches, the significance of celebrating Veterans Day on November 11, and the importance of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

During the session, students engaged in an activity where they brainstormed adjectives to describe veterans. Among the words chosen were courageous, loyal, patriotic, and brave. The key takeaway for students was understanding that expressing gratitude to veterans is essential on this day. The lesson concluded with students writing thank you letters to veterans.
