Coal City school board fills vacancy; adopts tentative tax levy

Ken P. Miller President | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

The Coal City Community Unit School District Board of Education held its November meeting, where Jeff Emerson was sworn in to fill an unexpired term. Emerson was chosen to complete the final six months of Mary Gill's term, who passed away in August. Having served 12 years previously on the board, Emerson expressed his desire to return and honor Gill. "I couldn’t think of a better way to honor Mary. I served on the Board with her for 12 years. When you think of the School Board at Unit District 1, I think of Mary Gill. She served for many, many years and to be able to serve out her term is an honor for me," Emerson stated.

During the meeting, several other actions were taken by the board:

- The tentative 2024 property tax levy was adopted and made available for public inspection before its expected adoption on December 4.

- A previously approved Emergency Health and Life Safety Resolution concerning Coal City Intermediate School was ratified.

- At the recommendation of the high school guidance office, mid-year graduation was approved for 12 students from the class of 2025.

- The board adopted a budget calendar for 2026 and instructed officials to prepare a tentative budget for July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

- A first reading on revised district policies took place.

- Donations were accepted: $1,837.94 from Grundy County and $3,000 from Jewel-Osco earmarked for supporting the high school band program.

- The quarterly dropout report filing with the Regional Office of Education was approved for October's end quarter.

- Student enrollment numbers at October's close were reported as totaling 2,171 students.

Personnel changes included accepting Megan Luttrell's resignation as a one-on-one special education aide at Intermediate School and employing Jordan Schmitt as a full-time classroom aide at high school. Additionally, Lauren Schoonover resigned as assistant varsity softball coach.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for December 4 at 6 p.m., in the Administrative Center Boardroom.
