Eighth graders explore history through "The Diary of Anne Frank" play
Kathryn Drey 8th ELA Instructor | Coal City Middle School

Students in Ms. Drey's eighth-grade English classes engaged in an exercise to enhance their speaking and listening skills through the reading of "The Diary of Anne Frank." The play highlights the challenges faced by Anne and her family while hiding in a secret annex in Amsterdam. At the start of this unit, students conducted background research on the historical period and the families involved, enabling them to discuss the era and gain a deeper understanding of the circumstances faced by those in hiding.

During their reading sessions, students sat in a circle and assumed roles from the play. This arrangement allowed for more student-led discussions, where they could collaboratively answer questions following each scene.
