Born on March 29, 1933, to Mitchell and Loretta Hanko, Joan married Orval "Jay" Bever on December 15, 1951, in Ritchey, Illinois. Beginning her professional journey at the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant and the Soldiers Widows Home in Wilmington, Joan later focused on raising her family and dedicated 15 years to volunteering at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.
An enthusiastic quilter and active member of local quilting guilds, Joan found joy in the programs and trips organized by the Coal City Public Library. She cherished gardening, birdwatching, and reading, as well as collaborating with her late husband in his stained-glass hobby. A cancer survivor, Joan's strength and resilience served as an inspiration to all.
Remembered for her kind spirit, commitment to her community, and the love she shared with family and friends, Joan is survived by her daughter Melaine (David) Nelson, as well as close friends Lorraine Ruffatti of Coal City and Bill and Mary Ann Lutke of New Mexico.
Preceding her in death were her parents and husband.
A visitation will be held at Reeves Funeral Home in Coal City on Thursday, January 16, 2025, followed by a procession to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood for the committal service. Contributions in Joan's memory can be made to Lightways Hospice, the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad, or the Wilmington Fireman's Benefit Association.
Family and friends are invited to share memories and condolences on Joan's memorial page via www.ReevesFuneral.com.
