Memorial Day serves as a time to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom. In Coal City, 761 residents served in the military from World War I to Vietnam, with 24 not returning home. Their names are engraved on plaques at the Community Veterans Monument.

The monument, hosted by the Coal City School District, includes over 1,100 veterans' names dating back to the Spanish-American War. It is located on the Coal City Intermediate School campus and stands as a reminder of military service sacrifices.

Currently, the school campus is closed due to an Emergency Health and Life Safety Amendment. The community is asked to refrain from visiting until this closure is lifted.

"We recognize that many community members traditionally visit the monument during Memorial Day weekend and throughout the year to honor those who have served," said a statement from the district. "However, out of an abundance of caution, we respectfully ask the community to refrain from visiting."

On this Memorial Day, people are encouraged to remember and honor fallen soldiers wherever they may be. The district expressed gratitude for understanding and continued support.
