Freshman English students at Coal City High School participated in an orientation at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) this week. The visit aimed to introduce students to research tools and reading resources available for their high school studies. During the session, students learned how to use research databases, find books with the digital card catalogue, and navigate the LRC website.

Allison Peterson, the high school librarian, explained different features of the library and led a tour of the LRC. She also organized a scavenger hunt to help students become familiar with library resources.

At the end of the orientation, students chose independent reading novels as part of their participation in Page-Turner Protocol. This initiative encourages students to build their reading stamina and develop a regular reading habit over seven weeks. Students will begin by reading 10 minutes per day and gradually increase to 30 minutes by the end of the program.

In class, students are expected to log their daily reading, write journal entries about their books, discuss them with classmates, and meet with Mrs. Hayse to talk about their progress and book choices. The program’s goal is for each student to find a book that suits them.

“To support your students at home, ask them about what they’re reading and whether or not their book is a perfect fit,” Mrs. Hayse said.
