Homecoming week at Coal City High School will take place from Monday, September 22 through Saturday, September 27. The annual event is organized by the Student Council and features a range of activities, including dress up days, class competitions, a parade, and the homecoming dance.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Coaler Clue,” inspired by the board game Clue. Student Council has arranged events throughout the week that focus on mystery and school spirit.

The festivities begin with Minion Monday. That afternoon, staff will play against seniors in a flag football game at the stadium. The homecoming king and queen—chosen by senior class vote—will be announced. Members of the court are Addison Harvey, Keirsten Gabehart, Mackenna Stewart, Maria Campagna, Carter Gill, Julian Micetich, Drake Stewart and Gavin Berger.

On Tuesday, students are encouraged to bring their books in anything but a backpack. Bingo and Singo games will be available and sign-ups for spirit night games will open.

Wednesday’s theme is meme day. In the evening, Student Council will host spirit night games.

Thursday features class color day: freshmen wear orange; sophomores red; juniors blue; seniors purple. The traditional pep assembly takes place that afternoon in the competition gym with games and activities planned.

Throughout homecoming week, students can earn points for their classes through hallway decorating and victories in spirit night games. The winning class receives the spirit stick.

Friday is Coaler Spirit Day. The community is invited to participate alongside students who will be dismissed early to allow families to attend the parade. Dismissal times are as follows: Early Childhood Center at 1:15 p.m.; Elementary School and Intermediate School at 1:35 p.m.; Middle School at 1:45 p.m.; High School at 1:40 p.m.

The parade steps off at 2:30 p.m., starting from South Broadway and Elm Street before heading north to Carbon Street. Greg Wills—a retiring English teacher and coach—has been selected as grand marshal by Student Council.

Both high school and middle school Coaler Marching Bands will participate in the parade along with other school and community groups.

Afterward, fans are encouraged to support the Coaler football team as they face Reed-Custer in conference play at Dzuris Stadium.

Homecoming week concludes with a dance on Saturday evening.

Other schools within Coal City Community Unit School District 1—including Coal City Early Childhood Center, Elementary School, Intermediate School, and Middle School—will also hold dress up days mirroring those of the high school schedule with additional themes such as Superhero Tuesday and Wear Gold Wednesday for younger students.
