Coal City Middle School eighth grade students have started reading their first novel of the year in social studies class. The chosen book is "Fever, 1793" by Laurie Halse Anderson. Set in Philadelphia during George Washington’s presidency, the novel follows a family as they face the challenges brought on by a yellow fever outbreak.

Social studies teacher Kate Cade commented on the students’ engagement with the material. Cade said, “Students are making predictions about the events to come and making connections with society today.”
