Coal City schools honor principals during annual Principals Week
Mr. Chris Spencer, Superintendent | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

School principals in the Coal City Community Unit School District #1 are being recognized during Principals Week, which takes place from October 20 to 24. The district is honoring Amanda Davidson of the early childhood center, Taryn Trotter of the elementary school, Tracy Carlson of the intermediate school, Cam Stone of the middle school, and Art Stafford of the high school.

Superintendent Chris Spencer expressed appreciation for their work. “Our school district is lucky to have a team of leaders that puts the needs of our students and staff first. They work to create safe, supportive and inspiring environments where learning can flourish, and we are grateful for their service to our school community,” Spencer said.

Principals Week has been observed annually since it was approved by the Illinois Governor’s Office in 1990. This year’s events include Principals Appreciation Day on Friday, October 24, coinciding with National Principals Month.

Dr. Jason Leahy, executive director of the Illinois Principals Association, commented on principals’ roles: “These courageous individuals lead their learning organizations with optimism, humility, vision, perseverance, and a deep commitment to do what is best for their students. Both research and common sense tell us how critical these servants are to positively influence young people, teachers, and communities. For this they deserve our respect and gratitude.”

The press release provides background on each principal:

- Art Stafford is in his third year as high school principal after previously serving as assistant principal for student services at Plainfield North High School.

- Cam Stone is in his second year as principal at Coal City Middle School; he returned to Coal City after working in Pontiac and Iroquois West districts.

- Tracy Carlson has served as intermediate school principal since 2011 and is one of three alumni currently serving as building administrators.

- Taryn Trotter joined as assistant principal at the middle school in 2018 before becoming elementary principal in 2021.

- Amanda Davidson has worked in the district for 17 years and has led the early childhood center for eight years.

Superintendent Spencer added: “During this time of celebration, I want to express my deepest appreciation to all of our principals. Their leadership, dedication, and heart make an incredible difference and they provide a foundation of our schools’ success.”
