October is recognized as Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Month, marking the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In observance of this month, students in Coal City Community Unit School District 1 participated in fire safety education with local firefighters.

Firefighters visited the school to discuss their equipment, show their fire truck, read a story, and emphasize the importance of fire safety both at school and at home. Miss Clavenna commented on the event: “We of course have talked about how to be safe at school, but not every parent has had the conversation about what to do at home,” Miss Clavenna said, adding, “This was a great opportunity for each student to understand the importance of keeping ourselves safe and learn something new –isn’t that what school is for anyways?“

After meeting with firefighters, students continued their learning by completing a Scholastic news activity and making their own badges.
