Mrs. Piatak’s eighth grade science class at Coal City Middle School has been focusing on geology since the start of the school year. The current lessons are centered on minerals and their properties.
Students in the class have been learning to identify minerals by examining characteristics such as hardness, streak, and luster. As part of a hands-on activity, they grew crystals using a hot water solution. Through this experiment, students observed how crystals form and noted the repeating patterns in their structure.
This approach is designed to help students better understand how minerals are formed and recognized in real-world contexts.
