Second grade students at Coal City Elementary School recently explored landscape art by studying the work of American artist Jen Aranyi, known for painting mountain scenes near her home. As part of their project, students learned about the concepts of foreground, middle ground, and background in creating landscapes.

The class also studied the northern lights, discussing why they occur and observing examples of their varied colors. In their artwork, students painted the northern lights in the background. For the middle ground, they practiced a hatching technique to create shadows. To show perspective in the foreground, students made pine trees appear larger when closer and smaller when farther away.

Art teacher Mrs. Brncich commented on the results: “the pieces turned out beautiful!”
