Last week, preschool students in Miss Shirkey’s class at Coal City Community Unit School District 1 learned about Veterans Day. The lesson focused on thanking those who serve to keep the country safe. Students discussed the role of veterans and the tradition of wearing red poppies as a symbol of remembrance for their bravery and kindness.
The children created their own poppy flowers to wear and practiced phrases such as, “We remember you” and “Thank you for helping our country.” They also learned that there are six different groups in the military, each with people who work hard to help others. The class connected these ideas to concepts like kindness, bravery, and gratitude through stories, pictures, and hands-on activities.
