Students conduct aquatic ecosystem study at Coal City Area Club
Mike Kostbade Position Environment Science | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

Mr. Kostbade's Environmental Science class recently conducted a field trip to the Coal City Area Club on October 2 as part of their study on aquatic ecosystems. During the visit, students measured various water quality parameters of the lake, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, water transparency, and nitrate levels. The class was accompanied by Georgette Vota, a member of the Area Club who has experience in testing these waters.

One notable aspect of the trip involved analyzing water transparency. This procedure required a small group to venture out to the middle of one of the lakes using a boat. Upon returning to class, students will analyze all collected data. They plan to revisit the same location in spring for a comparative study.
