Jeff Emerson returns to Coal City school board after vacancy

Jennifer Kenney Director of Curriculum & Assessment | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

The Coal City Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education has appointed Jeff Emerson to fill a vacancy on the board. This decision was made during a special meeting held on October 30. The vacancy arose following the death of Board Member and Secretary Mary Gill.

Emerson, who previously served on the Board from 2009 to 2020, expressed his interest in returning after Mrs. Gill's passing. He intends to serve until the upcoming election in April 2025.

“Having previously served on the Board of Education, Jeff understands the policies and procedures of the Board and District,” stated Superintendent Christopher Spencer.

Emerson will officially take his seat at the next Board meeting scheduled for November 6, where he will complete the remaining six months of Mary Gill’s term.

Superintendent Spencer noted that there was considerable interest from community members in joining the board. “Board members were pleased to see the level of interest community members have expressed in serving on the Board of Education. Following significant discussion, the Board determined at this time it was in the best interest of the district to have someone join them who is experienced and is able to get an immediate start,” he added.
