Board approves tax levy; discusses updates on Coal City Intermediate School

Prior to its scheduled monthly meeting, the Board of Education conducted a Truth in Taxation Hearing to gather public comments on the proposed tax levy. During the subsequent meeting, the Board approved the fiscal year 2024 tax levy.

Superintendent Chris Spencer updated attendees on Coal City Intermediate School. He confirmed that asbestos abatement under the bleachers was completed successfully and air quality tests returned clean results. Installation of wood piers in the gym began Wednesday to secure roof trusses. The Board anticipates receiving options and cost estimates for the building from architects soon. Spencer announced plans for town hall meetings starting in January regarding this school.

Jennifer Kenney, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, presented an overview of standardized testing and designations received by district academic buildings. Coal City Elementary and Intermediate Schools were rated exemplary, while Early Childhood Center, Middle, and High Schools earned commendable ratings.

A second reading occurred for over 50 revised district policies. A third reading will precede approval consideration.

Jason Smith was reappointed as Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Open Meetings Act (OMA) officer for 2025.

The Board accepted Angelica Acosta's resignation as a special education aide effective December 13th and approved Cody Dunavan's employment in maintenance.

Tanya Miller’s retirement date was revised from end-2025-2026 to end-2024-2025 school year.

Joseph Fatigante was approved as assistant high school speech coach; Brad Schmitt as assistant varsity softball coach; J.R. Rivera as assistant middle school wrestling coach following Rodney Monbrum's recommendation; additional wrestling coaches included Zach Finch, Adam Rodriguez, Ryan Wasielewski, Ryan Webster with volunteers Dean Christensen and Chris Figge also appointed.

Board members sanctioned annual health savings account contributions for administrators and contracted staff. District enrollment at November's end stood at 2,175 students.

The next regular monthly Board meeting is set for January 8th, 2025 with a study session on December 18th at District Administration Center Board Room starting at 6 p.m., both available via live stream or later viewing online.
