Students at Coal City Elementary School are engaging in a hands-on learning experience about landforms and erosion. Under the guidance of student teacher Miss Pavey, Mrs. Smith's class participated in an experiment to understand how erosion affects Earth's surfaces.
Miss Pavey introduced the lesson by showing videos of erosion and asked students to identify the causes behind these events. Following this, they watched another video demonstrating methods to prevent water erosion, such as levees, dikes, vegetation, and ground cover.
The students were divided into teams of five for the experiment. Each team received a tray with a mound of sand representing a mountain, along with popsicle sticks, rocks, and fake trees. Their task was to devise a plan and sketch how they would use these materials to prevent water from eroding their mountain.
After completing their plans, Miss Pavey allowed them to implement their designs on the sand mounds. The experiment concluded with Miss Pavey pouring water over each mountain while students observed whether their strategies successfully prevented erosion.
