Middle school students engage in personal finance lessons
Mrs. Ashley Matsko 6th/8th Grade | Coal City Middle School

Mrs. Matsko's eighth-grade exploratory classes have dedicated four weeks to learning about personal finances. Throughout this period, the students have explored essential topics including income, expenses, retirement investing, and budgeting.

A significant component of the course includes participation in a stock market game, where each student invests a simulated amount of $100,000 into stocks of their choice. They actively monitor these investments throughout the course duration. In addition, the students complete an online budgeting tutorial, where they are tasked with allocating money from a "paycheck" into various categories like savings, rent, groceries, and entertainment. This exercise is aimed at teaching students valuable skills in prioritizing expenses and effective financial management.
