The Coal City Community Unit School District #1 Board of Education convened on July 9 to discuss and act on various agenda items.
A resolution was approved to transfer funds from the working cash fund to operations, maintenance, and eventually to the capital projects fund for Intermediate School renovations. A one-year agreement with the Center for Special Education Services for school psychology services starting August 1 was also approved.
Director of student services Luke Krippel recommended renewing an agreement with Public Consulting Group, LLC for its EasyIEP modules for three years. This software aids administrators and educators in planning and monitoring requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act.
The board accepted a bid from Step by Step Childcare Center for before and after school care. A donation of $7,135.24 from Grundy County was also accepted.
CSBO Jason Smith was re-appointed as Title IX and Non-Discrimination Coordinator and Sex Equity Hearing Officer for the 2025-2026 school year. Luke Krippel was appointed as liaison for student records with the Department of Children and Family Services.
The district's cardiac plan and threat assessment plan received approval. The renewal of membership with TREES at a cost of $1,32.25 was approved; TREES manages grants for Career and Technical Education initiatives.
Raymond James & Associates, Inc.'s proposal to provide an annual Continuing Disclosure Report at a cost of $1,750 was approved, which is necessary for districts with outstanding bonds.
Revised district policies underwent a first reading. Certified staff employed for 2025-2026 include Sofia Rankin as a fifth-grade teacher at the intermediate school and Payton Hutchings as a physical education teacher at the high school.
Support staff hired include special education aides Amanda Chen, Kayla Hyzy, Brittany Jett, Brandi Novak, Kylee Ziolkowski, Kelsey Monshau; classroom aides Ronette Ksiazak, Katie Sinkular, Reagan Ullrich, Lauryen Pflibsen; Holly Kilgore-Hogg as reading aide; Marlaina Figge as athletics secretary.
Resignations were accepted from Kallista Helberg (fifth-grade teacher), Janet Mahlfeldt (reading aide), Debra Tapley (classroom aide). Transfers included Corrine Kolnicki to high school attendance secretary; Brian Elms to maintenance; Danielle Meyer to high school nurse; Holly Stellano to middle school classroom aide.
Retirement requests were accepted from Veronica Aldridge (middle school Spanish teacher), Shelby Skubic (second-grade teacher), Constance Terrel (third-grade teacher) effective end of 2028-2029 school year.
Extra-curricular resignations came from Kassandra Marsala (seventh grade girls softball coach), Thomas Purcell (junior varsity baseball coach), Nate Wills (assistant varsity baseball coach).
Middle school athletic director Rodney Monbrum recommended Kathryn Drey as B-Team soccer coach and Stephanie Vuscko as seventh grade softball coach—both appointments were approved by the board. High school athletic director Brad Boresi recommended Payton Hutchings as assistant varsity baseball coach; Kim Sondgeroth as winter dance team [poms] coach; Emily Vandergrift as assistant girls soccer coach—all positions were approved by the board.
The Board will meet in a special session on July 23 at 6 p.m., followed by their monthly study session. The next regular meeting is scheduled for August 6 at 6 p.m., all held in the Administration Center Board Room.
