Learning continues beyond the classroom for students at Coal City Early Childhood Center. One student, Huxtin Owensby, looks forward to following “Trashman Travis” during his rounds in the first grade wing. Huxtin has learned tasks such as breaking down boxes and locating supplies, and he has even greeted Mr. Johnson’s wife through Facetime.

According to school staff, these types of relationships contribute to the unique environment at the Early Childhood Center.

Coal City Community Unit School District 1 serves schools across Grundy and Will counties, including Coal City Early Childhood Center, Coal City Elementary School, Coal City High School, Coal City Intermediate School, and Coal City Middle School (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). The district employs 153 teachers with an average salary of $69,297 before pension contributions; nearly 78 percent are women and just over 22 percent are men. There are no teachers in the district with more than ten absences in a school year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

Demographically, the district is made up of 86.9 percent White students, 0.6 percent Black students, 9.6 percent Hispanic students, and 0.6 percent Asian students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In 2020, spending per student was $21,619 for a total expenditure of $47 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

"Huxtin shadows Mr. Johnson on all of his trash pick-ups around the first grade wing. He has learned about breaking down boxes, where supplies are stored, and even Facetimed with Mr. Johnson’s wife to say hello."

"This type of relationship is exactly what makes the Early Childhood Center the most special place."
