Ms. Foley’s second grade class at Coal City Elementary School has started the new school year by establishing daily routines and focusing on math skills. The students have been practicing their math facts and participating in activities designed to help them understand addition and subtraction.

“We changed addition facts into subtraction, and played games to help them with their fact families. They enjoyed using their whiteboard paddles to write their answers,” Ms. Foley said.

The class also held its first “Family Meeting” of the year, a weekly event where students gather in a circle each Friday to reflect on their progress and share positive experiences from the week. During these meetings, students discuss improvements and celebrate moments they are proud of.

Ms. Foley noted that several students talked about advancing on their Rocket Math chart, while others expressed pride in managing classroom behavior more effectively. “These students are off to a great year,” she said.
