Coal City Middle School uses skits to help seventh graders learn new vocabulary
Cameron Stone, Principal | Coal City Middle School

Each week, seventh grade English/language arts students at Coal City Middle School work with ten vocabulary words as part of their curriculum. The lessons include exercises such as finding synonyms, writing sentences that use the words in context, and exploring the difference between connotation and denotation. Students also analyze the meanings of the words.

One activity that has become popular among students is the vocabulary skit challenge. In this exercise, students act out scenes to convey the meaning of a word without saying the word itself or its definition. Their classmates then try to guess which word is being represented. According to teachers, students enjoy this activity so much that they often request to repeat it. The skit challenge helps them practice and improve their English/language arts skills in an engaging way.
