The Coal City Middle School Marching Coalers began the school year with several performances and achievements. Under the direction of Band Director Andrew Brimm, the band prepared Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” for two local parades: the Coal City High School Homecoming Parade on September 26 and the Grundy County Corn Festival Parade on September 28.

At the Grundy County Corn Festival, the Marching Coalers earned third place in Class A with a score of 64.4, winning the overall General Effect category. They finished just behind Central Middle School, which scored 64.7, and Minooka Jr. High, which scored 69.5. The Coalers placed third overall among seven participating middle and junior high school bands.

The Coaler Colorguard was recognized at the parade with the Best Flags/Auxiliary Award for all middle schools. Band Director Andrew Brimm said, “This is a huge testament to having a great colorguard instructor, Ms. DeKruiff, and having new uniforms, equipment and flags.”

Looking ahead, the sixth grade Cadet Band is preparing music for its Winter Concert scheduled for Thursday, December 4. The concert will feature songs such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.”

Mr. Brimm has also introduced a new exploratory class this year focused on music technology using SoundTrap software. In this class, students can create beats and songs either individually or in collaboration with classmates. He noted that it has provided students with a unique way to engage in music making.
