The Coal City Theatre Department is set to stage the Illinois premiere of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: High School Edition." This event marks a significant milestone as it is part of a national initiative by Broadway Licensing Global. The department was one of 70 high school programs that applied for the opportunity, with only 29 schools nationwide selected to present the play this fall.
The selection process involved submitting a video showcasing commitment to arts, inclusion, and diversity. Jack Micetich, Theatre Director, led his students in creating a Harry Potter-themed video highlighting the district's support for well-rounded student development. "We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase all our school district has to offer and the support our school community provides us," Micetich stated.
Micetich learned about their selection while en route to another theatre festival. Senior Mason Natyshok expressed excitement about premiering the show, stating, "It truly feels magical."
The play is based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. It follows Harry Potter's son Albus as he befriends Draco Malfoy's son, leading to an adventure that could alter past and future events.
Coal City's production promises theatrical magic that will captivate audiences. Micetich commented on the enthusiasm of his cast and crew: "Harry Potter fans and those who are new to the story will enjoy the tale that unfolds on stage."
The premiere performance is scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m., with additional shows on October 19, 20, 26, and 27 at Coal City Performing Arts Center. The cast includes Jordan Olson as Albus Potter and Brody D’Orazio as Scorpius Malfoy among others.
Tickets are available online or at the door before each performance for $10 per seat.
