The Lady Coaler Golf Team achieved a significant milestone by securing first place at the Illinois High School Association’s Regional Tournament held at Dwight Country Club on October 1. This victory marks a historic moment as they become the first girls' golf team from their school to win a Regional Championship.
Coal City had two standout performances with Dakota Clubb finishing third and Kylee Kennell placing fourth among 75 golfers. The team demonstrated strong skills, having four players in the top eight, including Madi Peterson who finished seventh and D'Arcy Ness who came in eighth.
Coach Harlan Kennell expressed pride in his team's performance: "I am extremely proud of how these girls have started playing together as a team to accomplish goals that they set at the end of last season. We struggled on the front 9 today, but they stayed positive and put together a great back 9. They are the first to pave the way for future girls golfers at Coal City High School, and that is very special." He is assisted by Tim Gabehart.
The individual scores for the Lady Coalers were Dakota Clubb with 94, Kylee Kennell with 97, Madi Peterson scoring 101, D’Arcy Ness with 102, Peyton Gibson at 113, and Livia Sulzberger finishing with 124.
Following Coal City's victory were teams from Hoopeston, Watseka, Grant Park, Dwight, McNamara, Reed-Custer, and Manteno. The Lady Coalers will now advance to compete in the IHSA Sectional at El Paso Golf Club on October 7.
