Athletico Physical Therapy has partnered with the Big Ten Conference to enhance medical care for student-athletes during the 2024 football season. This collaboration involves Athletico's medical staff remotely monitoring all Big Ten football games from a replay center in Rosemont, Illinois, supplementing on-site medical professionals.
The Independent Medical Spotter (IMS) program, established by the Big Ten in 2015, provides an independent medical monitor at home games to ensure student-athlete safety. The new partnership aims to elevate this program further.
Dan Guill, CEO of Athletico, stated, “We’re excited to be part of this program because Athletico and the Big Ten Conference share a common mission to create a safe environment for student athletes.” He praised the Big Ten for adopting technology that enhances care and expressed pride in Athletico's role in supporting athlete well-being.
The remote spotter is integrated with stadium personnel and utilizes real-time video replay. This setup allows on-site medical teams to detect injuries more effectively and make informed return-to-play decisions. The Big Ten is pioneering centralized remote observation among Division I football conferences.
A.J. Edds, Vice President of Football Administration for the Big Ten, remarked, “The Big Ten is happy to partner with Athletico and launch the centralized remote medical observer program for the 2024 football season.” He emphasized that this partnership provides additional resources aimed at enhancing student-athlete health.
Dr. Jim Borchers, Chief Medical Officer of the Big Ten, commented on the collaboration: “The collaboration between the Big Ten Conference and Athletico addresses the commitment to provide innovative approaches to safe athletic participation for student-athletes across the Big Ten Conference.”
Athletico Physical Therapy has been serving communities for over 30 years with locations across 24 states and Washington D.C., offering various rehabilitation services. The Big Ten Conference comprises universities committed to research and athletics integrity since its founding in 1896.
