Coal City High School students in Mrs. Stith’s Child Development 1 course recently participated in a unique assignment designed to teach them about parenting. The students were required to spend a weekend caring for lifelike baby simulators, which mimic the needs of real infants by crying for feeding, diaper changes, and comfort.
The exercise aimed to provide students with practical experience in infant care, challenging them to manage the demands of parenthood around the clock. This approach is intended to foster empathy, responsibility, and time management skills essential for caring for an infant.
Students reflected on their experiences through a follow-up journal assignment. Many expressed newfound respect for parents and caregivers and gratitude for their current teenage lifestyle.
