Nearly 6,000 individuals serve on local Boards of Education across Illinois, including seven who represent Coal City Community Unit School District 1. November 15 is recognized statewide as School Board Members Day in Illinois, a time to highlight the critical role these elected members play in education.
Superintendent Chris Spencer stated, “This is an opportunity to build community awareness and understanding about the essential role locally elected board of education members assume in a representative democracy.” The day serves as a chance for school districts and communities to express their support for board members who work tirelessly to fulfill educational goals.
These board members volunteer their time without pay, attending events, participating in professional development, serving on committees, and ensuring students have necessary resources. Spencer praised them at a recent meeting: “We appreciate everything you do in representing the community, and always putting our students first.”
Coal City's board boasts over 74 years of combined experience. Spencer acknowledged their efforts: “Today we honor and recognize our school board members—Ken Miller, Shawn Hamilton, Quint Harmon, Steve Rogers, Cindy Klein, Dan Englehart and Jeff Emerson—who are committed to making the Coal City School District a welcoming and safe place for all students to learn and grow.”
Ken P. Miller has served since 2007 and has been president for 11 years. His contributions have earned him recognition from the IASB as a Distinguished Board Leader. Vice President Shawn Hamilton has nearly 22 years of service and also received IASB recognition twice. Quint Harmon is in his 15th year with similar accolades.
Steve Rogers approaches four years on the board; Dan Engelhardt joined in 2021; Cindy Klein will reach two years by April 2025; Jeff Emerson recently returned after previously serving over twelve years.
Mary Gill was remembered for her nearly 27 years on the board before her passing in August. This year's theme for School Board Members Day is "Thank You." Spencer expressed gratitude saying, “Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice to our community and school district.”
