Students in the sixth-grade English/language arts class are concluding their poetry unit. Throughout this period, they have honed their ability to identify and interpret figurative language, such as metaphors, similes, and personification.
Mrs. Fincher, the English teacher, explained that students explored various poetic structures like free verse, concrete poems, haikus, and limericks. This exploration aimed to help students understand how a poem's form can enhance its meaning.
Class discussions focused on the purpose of poetry and extracting deeper meanings from texts. Sharon Creech's novel "Love That Dog" served as a catalyst for these analyses.
“Students have enjoyed examining the poems mentioned in the book, making connections between literature and poetry. Working in groups, students have shared insights and learned from each other, fostering a supportive learning environment,” Mrs. Fincher said.
