Mr. Chris Spencer, Superintendent | Coal City Community Unit School District 1

On July 9, the Coal City Community Unit School District #1 Board of Education dedicated a bench in memory of Mary Gill, who passed away in August 2024. Mary Gill served on the Board of Education for 27 years, with 24 years as Board Secretary, marking the longest tenure in the district's history.

Superintendent Chris Spencer highlighted her influence across the school district: "Mary’s dedication, passion and service impacted not only our school community but the community at large. This bench stands as a long-lasting tribute to Mary’s unwavering commitment to our students, teachers, staff, schools, families and communities."

The memorial bench is situated in front of the District Administration Center and is visible from the Board Room. It serves as a reminder of her contributions to various district projects such as the middle school referendum and construction of new facilities like the Early Childhood Center and administration center.

"We hope that this bench serves as a long-lasting tribute to Mary's legacy," Spencer said. "This bench is not just a place to sit but a place to reflect, be inspired and remember the legacy of Mary Gill."

Family members including Mary's husband Bill, her children Ann and Bill, and grandson Hunter attended the dedication ceremony.
