The Coalers Volleyball Program held its 10th Annual Childhood Cancer Awareness/Megan Bugg Night on Monday, September 15. The event is organized each year during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to honor Megan Bugg’s efforts in advocating for and funding research to end childhood cancer. Megan was a supporter of the Coaler Volleyball team, and the team has supported her mission.

Fundraising activities such as the annual Megan Bugg Night and a recent 5K Run/Walk in Coal City have helped the Megan’s Mission Foundation raise over $2 million to support ongoing research into cures for childhood cancers. This year, Dr. Kent Bugg, Megan’s father, participated in the event.

Coal City Community Unit School District 1 includes several schools across Grundy and Will counties: Coal City Early Childhood Center, Coal City Elementary School, Coal City High School, Coal City Intermediate School, and Coal City Middle School (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). The district employs 153 teachers with an average salary of $69,297; most are women (77.9 percent), while men make up 22.1 percent of staff. No teachers had more than ten absences last school year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). According to state data, the student population is primarily White (86.9 percent), with Hispanic students representing 9.6 percent; Black and Asian students each account for 0.6 percent (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In 2020, spending per student was $21,619 for a total expenditure of $47 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
