Riverside Healthcare has announced the introduction of two advanced technologies to enhance lung care services. The healthcare provider now offers the Zephyr Valve and Ion Robot, aimed at improving treatment for patients with lung conditions.
Dr. Raju Abraham, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist at Riverside, expressed enthusiasm about these advancements: “We are excited to be the first health system in the community to offer the Zephyr valve procedure and Ion Robot.” He emphasized that these innovations align with Riverside's mission to deliver high-quality care locally.
The Zephyr Valve is designed for patients suffering from severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and emphysema. Traditional treatments for these conditions were often invasive, but the FDA-approved Zephyr Valve provides relief by allowing easier breathing without major surgery. This procedure can be completed in less than an hour, potentially enhancing patients' quality of life significantly.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 14 million Americans have COPD, with 3.5 million affected by emphysema. Despite medication use, many continue to experience symptoms like hyperinflation where air becomes trapped in the lungs.
For lung biopsy procedures, Riverside has introduced Ion by Intuitive. This robotic technology allows physicians to obtain lung tissue samples more accurately than traditional methods, reducing the need for multiple biopsies due to its precision. Dr. Abraham noted that “the Ion robot revolutionizes lung biopsies” benefiting both patients and physicians alike.
In addition to these technologies, Riverside offers a comprehensive lung cancer screening program for high-risk individuals aged 50-77 who meet specific criteria related to smoking history.
Riverside President and CEO Phil Kambic stated: “Riverside is dedicated to providing top-notch lung care to our patients, right here in our community.”
